Overview

Independence is a 52-foot private sailing yacht based in Koh Samui, designed by marine architect Doug Peterson. Her interior is fitted with solid Burmese teak, Italian Alcantara cushions and a black granite galley top. Every charter is exclusive to your party, and all guests are welcome aboard, including LGBTQ+ travellers. The yacht has three cabins (a king and two queens), an air-conditioned salon, a changing room with hot shower and an upper deck with a BBQ. The same boat works for a short sunset sail or a long island-hopping cruise.

Captain Luca, an Italian with more than 25 years at sea, skippers the yacht. Nok, who has spent 10 years in yachting, is the hostess. The crew speaks English and Italian, and the Italian influence shows in the kitchen: fresh seafood lunches, white snapper Sicilian style and sunset canapés served with Italian sparkling wine. Guests can take the helm, snorkel, trail-fish, be pulled up the 20-metre mast or relax on a private beach.

Day charters

The Sunset trip is a three-hour evening sail from Koh Samui towards Koh Som and Koh Phangan, with the sun setting over the Ang Thong archipelago. The Half-Day Koh Phangan trip (about 5 hours) sails past the Full Moon Party beach to a bay reachable only by sea. Coffee and croissants are served on the way out and an Italian brunch on the way back.

The Full-Day Koh Phangan charter (about 8 hours) stops to snorkel the colourful reef at Koh Ma. Lunch is served on board, then you go ashore at Than Sadet to see the waterfalls and the wild monitor lizards, which can reach two metres. The day ends with sunset canapés and wine. The 11-hour Angthong Marine Park day explores an archipelago of 42 limestone islands. It includes the climb to the viewpoint over the saltwater Emerald Lake (Talay Nai), a picnic on a private beach and the Than Sadet waterfalls, before a sunset sail home.

Overnight and honeymoon cruises

Overnight charters run from 1 night to 13 nights and are planned with you. A sample route calls at Koh Tao, Ang Thong, Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Phangan. The crew times the Ang Thong visit so that dinner on the main island happens after the day boats have left, when monkeys come down from the mountain. The viewpoint visit is timed to come before the crowds arrive. Overnight trips have one cabin for two adults and an infant or small child. One or two more guests can sleep in the living room.

The Honeymoon cruise is an eight-day island-hopping journey around Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Ang Thong and the south of Samui. It is built around romantic moorings, dinners at restaurants and beach terraces, a stargazing bay, a Discovery Scuba Diving session, Thai massage on the beach and fire shows. You can bring your own photographer, massage therapist or dive instructor, and the programme is fully adaptable. For birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions, a complimentary Italian pastry cake can be arranged if requested at booking.

Full-Day Koh Phangan

Overview

Koh Phangan covers 168 square kilometres and is the largest of Samui's neighbouring islands. Its coastline has white sandy beaches and secluded bays, some of which can be reached only by boat. More than three quarters of the island is mountainous tropical forest, and a large part of it is protected as national park. As a result, the landscape has stayed wild and largely free of heavy development.

This eight-hour private charter begins with snorkelling over the colourful reef at Koh Ma. Lunch is cooked on board by an Italian chef, then you go ashore at Than Sadet to see the waterfalls and the wild monitor lizards, which can reach two metres in length. The yacht sails home in the evening with sunset finger food, tapas and wine.

Angthong Marine Park

Overview

Ang Thong, which means golden bowl, is a national marine park of 42 limestone islands west of Koh Samui. This 11-hour private charter sails out to the archipelago for a full day of exploring. Most of the islands are steep, forested and uninhabited.

The first main stop is Talay Nai, where a climb up steps leads to a viewing platform over the Emerald Lake. This saltwater lagoon is ringed by limestone cliffs, and it is for looking at rather than swimming in. After that the yacht moves to a private beach for a picnic, with time to sunbathe or swim. In the afternoon you go ashore at Than Sadet for the waterfalls and the wild monitor lizards. The yacht then sails home for sunset.

Sunrise Champagne Breakfast

Overview

This private three-hour sunrise cruise on the 52-foot Independence is made for a calm start to the day. You leave your hotel before dawn and glide out onto the Gulf of Thailand as the first light spreads across the water. The Samui coastline is quiet at this hour, and you have the whole boat to yourselves.

As the sun rises, the crew leads a gentle guided meditation on the front deck. A Mediterranean-style organic breakfast follows, served with French Champagne or Rosé Champagne. The kitchen works in the Italian tradition and can adapt the menu to dietary needs, allergies and religious restrictions.

The cruise suits honeymoons, anniversaries, wellness escapes and birthdays, and a complimentary cake can be arranged at booking for birthdays and anniversaries. Up to three children under 16 can join free of charge when accompanied by their parents, and additional children are available by arrangement. The crew speaks English and Italian, and the itinerary can change with weather and sea conditions.

Night Fishing and Fine Dining

Overview

This relaxed evening of fishing and fine dining lasts about seven hours. The Independence sails out of Bangrack Bay and follows the north coast of Samui to find a good fishing spot. You get a night on the water without a full day on the boat.

The chef cooks dinner on board and serves it on deck as the sun goes down. Later, green lights are switched on over the dark sea to draw fish towards the boat. Bait, tackle and lights are all on board and ready to use.

An Italian skipper and a local Thai fishing expert stay with you all night. They are patient with first-timers and happy to share tricks with experienced anglers. Depending on season and weather, the catch can include barracuda, croaker, flounder, bass, trout and kingfish. The evening suits couples looking for a different kind of date night, friends and families celebrating a special occasion, and anglers of any level.

The yacht can also offer trail fishing, a turn at the helm and stargazing if the mood takes you. The crew speaks English and Italian.

Full Moon Party Tour

Overview

This overnight private charter takes you around Koh Phangan and delivers you to the Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Beach. During the day the Independence sails across from Samui, stopping for snorkelling at Koh Ma, lunch and beach time on the way. At sunset you toast with finger food and bubbles before heading to the party. An Italian skipper, a Thai hostess and an English-speaking guide look after the group.

Your yacht stays moored off Haad Rin for the whole night and waits for you. It gives you a floating base with a hot shower, a private bed and a place to rest or have a quiet drink away from the crowds. The party draws tens of thousands of people to the beach, with DJs playing trance, techno, drum and bass, dance and reggae, plus a fire show.

The party is optional. If you prefer a calmer evening, the captain can moor in a quiet bay instead. In the morning you have a light breakfast and sail back to Samui. The party follows the lunar calendar and can move because of local holidays and regulations, so ask the crew to confirm dates.

Sailing and Yoga

Overview

This three-day, two-night yoga and sailing retreat is set in the Ang Thong Marine Park. You sail between islands on the Independence, practise yoga on deserted beaches and on deck, and sleep on board in a private king cabin with its own toilet. Classes last about an hour and are held at sunrise, in the afternoon and at sunset.

A Vinyasa teacher with about 20 years of experience travels with the group. Beach practice happens on sand, so sessions focus on grounding, balance and core strength, followed by guided meditation. Highlights include a sunrise meditation at the 300-metre viewpoint and a sunset session by the Emerald Lake (Talay Nai).

Between sessions you can swim, snorkel, paddle board, kayak, explore caves and beaches by dinghy and learn the basics of sailing. The route takes in Ko Paluai, Ko Wua Ta Lap and other islands of Mu Ko Ang Thong, with a stop for dinner at a beachside restaurant. The chef prepares fresh Mediterranean-style meals on board, including grilled vegetables and local fish.

The yacht has an air-conditioned salon and a front deck used for meditation. Life on board is shared, so guests are asked to help keep the boat tidy. Up to three children travelling with their parents sail free, and additional children are available by arrangement. A shorter 3-hour sunrise or sunset yoga cruise can be arranged separately on request.

Overnight 1 nights/2 days

Overview

The shortest overnight option aboard the 52-foot Independence is a private two-day escape to the Ang Thong archipelago. You leave Koh Samui in the morning, swim and snorkel on the way, and anchor for the night once the day boats have gone home. Dinner is served on the main island at a quiet hour, when the monkeys come down from the mountain to see who is there.

Next morning the crew takes you to the main viewpoint early, before the crowds arrive, then sails you back to Samui with time for a last swim. The route is only a suggestion. The crew plans the cruise with you and can swap in other bays or islands.

Up to two adults sleep in the private cabin, with an infant or small child if needed. One or two more guests can sleep in the living room. Two children up to 16 travelling with their parents sail free. Longer cruises of up to 13 nights / 14 days can be arranged on request.

Sailing and Recreational Diving

Overview

This three-day, two-night liveaboard cruise combines sailing with a first taste of scuba diving around Koh Tao. No diving certificate is needed. A qualified dive professional leads a half-day Discovery Scuba Diving session to a maximum depth of 12 metres, and the Independence is your floating base for the whole trip.

You sail from Samui to Koh Tao, snorkelling at Shark Island on the way. You anchor overnight in the quiet bay of Hin Wong. The next day you explore Koh Nang Yuan, Mango Bay and the reefs around Koh Tao. On the last day you return via Koh Phangan, with a hike to the Than Sadet waterfall viewpoint and champagne canapés at sunset on the way home.

The crew chooses dive and snorkel spots away from the busiest dive boats. Moorings are quiet, with stargazing and dinners ashore. Whale sharks are sometimes seen around Koh Tao, with April and May the best months. Guests have a private cabin, a chef on board and a flexible, personal schedule.

Rates for this package are on request. The crew speaks English and Italian, and the route can change with weather and sea conditions.

Overview

This is a private birthday celebration at sea aboard the Independence. It works for one person, a couple or a group of friends and family. Rates are on request, and the programme is planned around the guest of honour.

The boat is decorated with white balloons before you step on board. The chef makes a birthday cake with your name and candles, and Moët champagne is served to toast the occasion. The crew films the day with a GoPro and gives you the video as a keepsake.

The evening builds to a dinner on board, then a fire show on the beach and two hours of live guitar and singing. Between the highlights you can swim, snorkel, trail-fish, take the helm or be pulled up the 20-metre mast. For children under 12, the yacht can also offer extra entertainment on request.
